Hogan: The China Issue

Book, 2013

Client: Hogan
Date: November 2013

The Italian luxury brand Hogan, on the occasion of a photography exhibition at the Shanghai Gallery of Art, commissioned us the production of a book.

The Italian luxury brand Hogan, on the occasion of a photography exhibition at the Shanghai Gallery of Art, commissioned us the production of a book.

In collaboration with “L’uomo Vogue”, the book features the portraits of well known Chinese personages and influential representatives of different fields: cinema, music, entertainment, design, fashion and art. We structured the publication from the idea of developing a new way of bridging the gap between the Western world and the Chinese culture through paper as a traveller notebook.

The cover is made according to occidental methods, however it is bound with a red cotton thread which recalls the oriental sphere. Furthermore, the inner pages are chopper folded in a traditional oriental way. This type of binding allows the usage of three different types of paper. We used a black paper coated with potato flour to print the photographs by Francesco Carrozzini, with white ink on black paper to express the energy and deepness of a daguerreotype. We used tissue paper for the images taken form “The China Issue” of “L’Uomo Vogue”, in contrast with the Chinese writings on satin white paper that you can see through the lighter paper. The book was published in a limited edition of 888 copies. It also includes an introduction by Franca Sozzani, Editor in chief of “Vogue Italia”, and Andrea Della Valle, Tod’s CEO.
